US Customs
After you clear immigration, you will get your checked in baggage's and then pass through customs.
Use the green channel if you have nothing to declare. You will be giving the customs form to the office there. They might choose you for a secondary inspection. If chosen you have to open the baggage for inspection and answer any question they might have about the stuff you have.
After customs
- If the port of entry is your final destination, get out of the airport. You are done.
- If you have a local flight to catch, you will have to check-in your baggages again at the airline counter. Then proceed to the gate of the departing flight.
- If you are connecting to a local flight and if you have enough time between flights, it is a good point to call the person picking you at the final destination to update them on your status. For this you can use the coin operated telephones in the airport. You need about three or four quarters ($0.25) to make the call. You can get Quarters from India itself or can get it at the airport as change when you buy something. The instructions for making a call will be written on the telephone and follow them carefully.
Getting to the University
- Figure out a way to reach the place you are going to stay, from the airport before you start from India. You can contact the International student office or the Indian student organization to figure what is the cheapest and efficient way to reach the University. Most of the time they make arrangements to help new students reach the University or atleast they can recommend you the best option. Some options: Free shuttle by the university, a paid Shuttle that runs between the airport and University, someone picking you up or Taxi (expensive and easiest). If there are multiple people travelling with you then make sure the baggages will fit in the method of transportation you are going to use
Good to know
- There might be multiple baggage carousels. Use the display board to find which baggage carousel will have the baggages from your flight.
- There is a small chance that the baggage might not arrive. If it does not arrive, make sure it is not there in the carousel and then go to the airline desk and file a "baggage not arrived" claim form. The form will ask for your ticket information, baggage description and the address you want it to be delivered after it arrives. They will deliver it to you in a day or two.
- Keep all of your documents in the carry-on.
- You might want to carry extra transcripts for use in the US.
- Make a photocopy of all the documents you are carrying with and leave it in India.
